Solar PV System Design

Working with the team from Dimension Homes, the main contractor, we delivered a commercial solar solution for this new build Gospel Hall near Edinburgh.

We designed and installed a large-scale in-roof solar PV system on the south-facing roof – designed to maximise generation while integrating with the new roof structure.  The system is designed to produce more electricity than the property uses annually, allowing surplus generation to be exported back to the grid.

Trays fitted and flashing prepared before installing the 'in roof' solar panels.

Why an in-roof solar system?

Unlike traditional on-roof solar systems, where panels sit above existing tiles, an in roof solar system replaces part of the roof covering itself.  This approach offers a more streamlined finish, with panels sitting flush to the roofline and integrated trays and flashings delivering a fully weathered solution without compromising on output.

Safety, access & quality installation

Safety and quality start long before panels are installed, so full scaffolding access was provided to allow safe handling of materials, correct installation of trays, flashings and panels, and consistently high workmanship across all roof details, while ensuring safety for the Ideal Electrical team.

In roof-integrated system installation

We installed the in-roof tray system and associated flashings, integrating them into the existing roof structure to give a seamless and weather-tight finish.  Particular attention was given to correct weatherproofing and drainage details, protecting the roof against the elements and ensuring long-term reliability.  The system layout and panel alignment were set out precisely to achieve a clean, consistent appearance, with all fixing points installed to provide strength, durability, and resilience over the full lifespan of the system.

Solar Panel Installation

All 58 panels were installed neatly within the in-roof solar system, creating a uniform all-black finish that sits flush with the roofline.  The completed array blends seamlessly with the property, delivering a modern, low-profile appearance without compromising performance.

Our team completed all DC and AC electrical works, including string configuration, inverter connection, and the installation of the required isolation and protection.  Cable routes were planned and installed neatly, with all works comforming to current electrical standards to ensure safe, reliable operation.

Once installation was complete, the system was fully tested and commissioned.  With verified performance, the system was ready for grid connection and ongoing use.

G99 Application and DNO coordination

Due to the size of the installation, a G99 application was required to connect to the electricity network.  We managed the entire process on behalf of the client, including submitting the application, liaising with the local DNO, and responding to technical queries through to final approval and connection.  Handling this process in-house removed complexity for the client.

The Result

The finished installation delivers a powerful 26.1kW solar PV system on this church building with a clean, integrated in-roof finish.  The system is expected to generate more electricity than the site uses annually, providing ongoing savings through reduced grid import while allowing surplus energy to be exported.  Designed with performance, aesthetics, and longevity in mind, this project demonstrates how solar can be both high-performing and visually refined when installed correctly.

Here’s what one of the directors at Dimension Homes had to say…

We hired Ideal Electrical to plan and install a large 26kW solar system on this new Gospel Hall.  Mark and the team were great to work with – the workmanship and the in-roof finish is excellent and the church client will be delighted.
